Approved as missionary interns to Tokyo, Japan, in December 2017, Daniel and Shelby Culwell are seeking prayer and financial partners for their two–year internship. The couple, excited about the opportunity to serve with Heath and Joni Hubbard and Jack and Ashley Ketteman to start a new church, hopes to be ready to head to Tokyo in late 2018. The three couples plan to begin a bilingual church in the Tokorowaza City area of Tokyo.
Daniel grew up in Rose Bud, Arkansas. He was led to Christ after a church lock-in as a 12-year-old. He and his brother were baptized together on an Easter Sunday. Daniel attended Welch College. In 2009, he traveled with a college group to Japan. Graduating in 2015 with a degree in youth ministry and business, Daniel went on to study mechanical engineering at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee.
Shelby grew up in Ashland City, Tennessee. She was led to Christ when she was young and was baptized with all of her siblings on a Mother’s Day. She attended church camp every summer until college. She returned to camp to work as a counselor. She credits church camp for playing a huge part in making her the person she is today. Shelby completed a year at Welch College before transferring to Austin Peay where she earned a degree in graphic design with a business minor.
Daniel and Shelby married in March 2014.
Daniel and Shelby have a home in Tennessee but travel to Arkansas to work in the Culwell family business for a couple of weeks each month. With the travel, they work with the youth groups at both of their home churches.
The Culwells served as E-TEAM leaders to Chicago in 2017. This experience reminded Daniel of his sophomore year at Welch when he prayed Isaiah 6:8—“Here am I, send me” during a Wednesday evening campus service.
They have two boys: Easton (born November 2015) and Barrett (born December 2016).
Daniel: Mt. Bethel FWB Church, Rose Bud, Arkansas
Shelby: Bethel FWB Church, Chapmansboro, Tennessee

- Pray for our boys they are having a hard time adjusting to all the travel and no place to call home. Barrett is most comfortable in Arkansas but we aren’t there often anymore, both boys have trouble going to nap and bed, they both used to be really good at just laying down and sleeping. PThe car is no fun for them and many times its just a lot of crying. Pray for peace.
- Pray for our funds to come in quickly, we have about 7 weeks till our September goal to be fully funded. We are at about 67%.
- Pray for our families as they try to adjust to us leaving.
- Pray for the Holy Spirit to be working in the lives of the Japanese we will come in contact with while we are there.
