Blooming in Community: Rooted in Christ, Growing Together

Written by Lauren Riggs, IM missionary in Spain

April 2026

Our church began this year with a simple but powerful word we wanted to focus on: florecer – which means “to bloom.” This word has become a challenge for growth, transformation, and God’s faithfulness in every season of life. It is about becoming who God created us to be, even when the process is slow, hidden, or uncomfortable. We have worked to keep this word in mind as we plan events and ministries for the church- church devotions, VBS theme, and even women’s craft nights.

We had our first women’s craft night at church in March, and I called it Rooted in Christ. Women came not just to make something with their hands, but to be reminded of Who sustains their hearts. Blooming requires the right conditions: light, nourishment, patience, and strong roots. Without roots, nothing can flourish.

When I was a little girl, my grandmother used to sing a song to me. “I shall not be, I shall not be moved. I shall not be, I shall not be moved. Just like a tree that’s planted by the water, I shall not be moved.” Being rooted in Christ means anchoring our identity, our decisions, and our hope in something unshakeable. Just like a plant draws nutrients and strength from the soil, we draw life from our relationship with Him. Without that foundation, any attempt to bloom will be short-lived. But when our roots go deep, we can withstand any storm, drought, or uncertainty life throws our way.

What made the evening especially meaningful was the sense of community. Being able to take time to sit together, create, and share reminded us that we are not meant to grow alone. Our church community plays a vital role in helping each of us bloom. We encourage one another, pray for one another, and walk alongside each other through every season. So as we were stringing beads and tying knots, we also were able to share our lives with each other–difficult moments and beautiful moments–where we saw God move the previous week and what has been heavy on our hearts lately.

At the end of the night, the women went home with a cute beaded succulent, which I hope serves as a reminder whenever they look at it. Our prayer is that throughout the year, our church can learn and be reminded of the different stages of blooming and how each stage is a necessity. So that we can reflect God’s love to those around us who need Him.
