Meet Dennis and Mary Heath, IM Missionaries to Bulgaria

Dennis and Mary were Free Will Baptist affiliate missionaries from 1988 to 1994 while serving with the US Air Force in Germany. With Mary at his side, Dennis pastored 14 years at Stonewall, Oklahoma, and three years at Ardmore, Oklahoma, following his military retirement in 2003. They are answering the call to return to missionary service and will serve with the church-planting teams in Bulgaria.

Dennis and Mary met and were married while at Air Force technical training at Biloxi, Mississippi, in 1978. Dennis was saved at the age of 14 in Orlando, Florida, while participating in a Bible Study led by his 9th-grade music teacher. Mary was saved on Easter Sunday in 1979 at the church where Dennis’ parents attended in Orlando, Florida, while Dennis had already been sent to Germany. By the time they were reunited in June of 1979, God had prepared them both for a lifetime of service to Him.

Dennis is from Centrahoma, Oklahoma, and Mary is from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They have two sons, a daughter, and seven grandchildren.

Why Bulgaria?

Perhaps the best question is, “Why not Bulgaria?” Dennis and Mary are lifelong servants of the Lord. When national missionary, Trif Trifonov, said in the summer of 2023 that they were needed in Bulgaria, they immediately responded affirmatively under the direction of the Holy Spirit.

Bulgaria has nearly 7 million residents, but less than one percent claim to be evangelical Christians. Based on recent reports, about 62,000 Bulgarians are dying each year without knowing Jesus as their Lord and Savior. We can be part of reducing that tragic number.

How they are ministering in Bulgaria

  • Language: Both Dennis and Mary are learning the Bulgarian language with private tutors. They are also participating in the twice-weekly English classes at the church.

  • Preaching: Dennis is preaching regularly at Shumen, Novi Pazar, Kalugeritsa, Svishtov, Odarne, and Pleven.

  • National Conference: Dennis is teaming up with fellow intern Jacob Voltz to create a concept proposal for a national conference center and family camp. He is also working on meetings with Bulgarian national leaders in the Ministry of Culture to discuss both the conference center and the new Svishtov church project.

  • Building Relationships: Mary is beginning meetings with a grandmother in Kaspichan, where she will exchange cooking ideas while becoming more conversant in Bulgarian. The lady has a large and extended family which is connected with the church outreach at Kalugeritsa.
