Yucatán Mexico Partnership
Mérida is the largest city on the Yucatán Peninsula, with a metropolitan population of 1.25 million people. The Mexican state of Yucatán (one of 3 states on the Peninsula) has a population of 2.4 million people and no Free Will Baptist Church. Seventy-eight percent of the population identify as Roman Catholics and only ten percent as Evangelical Protestants. The largest ethnic group is Mayan or Mestizos (a mixture of Mayan and Spanish), and some pockets still practice the ancient Mayan indigenous religion.
Pastor Samuel Ramos and his wife Ana Belkis, from our FWB work in Cuba, immigrated to Yucatán in 2018 and recently started holding services in their home in the city of Mérida. They have a strong desire to see this group become the nucleus of a new FWB church. Our partnership with them aims to establish a church in this strategic city to then reach out to other parts of the state of Yucatán. Pastor Samuel also has a passion for training leaders in Bible and ministry.
